The new Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport is a good choice if you want a Z06's agility but don't think you can trust yourself with 650 horsepower. And now that we have the official pricing details, we can say that the new GS is also a suitable substitute if you're put off by the Z06's $80,395 price tag.

Prices for the mid-range Corvette have been confirmed at $66,445 for the hardtop and $70,445 for the convertible. That works out to a $13,950 savings compared to either the Z06 Coupe or the $84,395 Convertible. But perhaps more importantly, it's only $10,050 more than the base, $56,395 C7 Coupe or $60,395 C7 Convertible.

That, friends, is a bargain. Just $10,000 more gets you a lighter version of the standard, 460-horsepower Corvette that can pull up to 1.2 Gs in the bends. It has super-sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, a unique wheel design – 12-inch-wide wheels in back! – big, powerful Brembo brakes, MagneRide, and an electric limited-slip differential. If you need more performance, carbon-ceramic brakes are available, as are Pilot Sport 2 Cup tires. In short, this is a cut-rate track toy that looks like it will strike a real sweet spot in the Corvette range.

Now, if Chevrolet will just let us get behind the wheel...
